Historic England's work on marginalised histories.
Rosie Sherrington, Senior Inclusion and Diversity Advisor at Historic England commissioned and managed the Pride of Place LGBTQ heritage project . The two year long project in partnership with Leeds Beckett University had the following specific goals:
· To identify, document, and increase awareness of the significance of LGBTQ histories and heritage in relation to England's buildings and landscapes.
· To engage community members, the heritage sector and scholars in documenting locations of LGBTQ heritage by identifying sites, and by sharing and recording these histories for the future.
· To identify a number of key LGBTQ heritage sites for consideration for inclusion on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE), and to amend existing entries on the NHLE where there are important LGBTQ histories attached to listed sites which deserve to be made better-known.
· To nominate buildings or landscapes for consideration for local heritage listing on the basis of their significance to LGBTQ histories.
· To encourage the management of current heritage sites open to the public, as well as those designated in the future, to include LGBTQ histories in their interpretive content as a key part of engaging with the public.
Rosie will talk about why this project was commissioned, what the project involved, how colleagues responded to it, how successful it was in achieving its stated goals, and the long term legacy of Pride of Place. She will talk about why social history matters to traditional heritage organisations and the challenges and fun involved in queering the national story. There will be an opportunity for discussion at the end.
Rosie Sherrington has worked in Inclusion and Diversity at Historic England for over ten years. During that time she has managed a series of social history projects exploring the relationships between marginalised history and the built environment. These have included projects on disability history, women’s history, queer history and she is currently working on a major black and Asian heritage project called Another England. Rosie works to make sure that the stories we tell and the heritage we value is as fully representative of the diversity of England’s people as possible.
