New Horizons Focus: Frank Denyer

“New Horizons” features recent musical developments and musical crossovers with the shakuhachi, from the 1970s through to the present, including contemporary classical music, jazz, popular music, improvisation and electronic musics.

Frank Denyer is an English composer whose brilliantly coloured and imaginatively rich compositions fall between several and into none of the accepted categories of contemporary music.

Programme:
KAWAMURA Kizan, shakuhachi; tba, percussion – Wheat (Frank DENYER)
Emmanuelle ROUAUD, shakuhachi; TAKAHASHI Gaho, koto – I thought about Eva (Henri ALGADAFE) première
Véronique PIRON, shakuhachi; Lydia DOMANCICH, piano – Treuzell (Footbridge) (L. Domancich / V. Piron, 2018) première
Kiku DAY, shakuhachi – Woman with Jinashi Shakuhachi (Frank DENYER)
ZENYOJI Keisuke, shakuhachi – Yo (TAKAHASHI Kumiko)
KURODA Reison, shakuhachi – Winged Play (Frank DENYER)

The shakuhachi is a traditional end blown Japanese bamboo flute, with (usually) five finger holes and an angled blowing edge. It is played vertically and its tone is often described as haunting and meditative, being rich with inflections of pitch and timbre.

If you are planning to see several concerts, you may want to consider our Discover Shakuhachi Pass, which gives you access to all the concerts and lectures at Goldsmiths during the Festival days!
