River Infrastructure and its Securitisation

This event is cancelled due to Covid-19. A new will be announced eventually.

The first Infrastructural Exploration of the new year will look at River Infrastructure and its Securitisation by walking the reach of the river from the Thames Barrier to Gallions Reach DLR via the Woolwich Ferry or Woolwich Foot Tunnel.

This walk is part of a series of events during which we invite participants to join us in reflecting on the relationship between the city and its infrastructure through our multisensory and embodied encounters with and in the urban landscape.

We will meet at the EXIT to the Thames Barrier Information Centre at 10.30am on Thursday 20th February.

From here we will walk along the Thames Path towards Gallions Reach DLR station crossing the river on either the Woolwich Ferry or via the Woolwich Foot Tunnel. The entire route is approximately 3 miles and will take place on paved and unpaved paths. We anticipate that the walk will take between 2 and 3 hours but there are opportunities to foreshorten the excursion. The exact route will be confirmed on the day and will be weather-dependent.

Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear and bring drinks and snacks.

For information about access to the Woolwich Ferry see: https://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/info/200260/public_transport/61/ferry_services
The TfL 'Getting around London: Your guide to accessibility' states: 'The Woolwich ferry is a free service operating between Woolwich and North Woolwich. This service is accessible to wheelchair users and powered buggy users.'

For information about access to the Woolwich Foot Tunnel see: https://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/info/200259/transport_and_travel/693/foot_tunnels

Many thanks to Jon, Sara and Theo for their suggestion of this walk and their help in organising the exploration.

If you would like to join us or if you have any questions or would like a map of the proposed route, please don't hesitate to contact us.
