Event overview
Director of Liberty, Martha Spurrier, will survey progress with human rights in the UK in the last twenty years and reflect on areas where significant change is still required.
In this lecture, Martha Spurrier, the director of Liberty, one of the foremost human rights NGOs in the UK, will survey the great strides made for human rights in the UK in the last twenty years, focussing on key areas where real progress has been made for individual rights and state accountability.
It will also take a critical look at the human rights movement, reflecting on the areas where human rights haven’t been able to secure systemic change or embed true equality and thinking about what we should be aiming for over the next two decades.
In addition to being the executive director of Liberty, Martha is a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers and has recently been appointed Visiting Professor of Law at Goldsmiths.
Martha is bringing to the department of Law outstanding leadership in human rights legal practice and reform, and unique experience in providing direction to a large team of lawyers, policy specialists, researchers, communications experts and fundraisers to run high-profile and influential litigation to advance human rights.
This guest lecture takes place in the context of the Year 1 LLB Law module 'Public Law and the Human Rights Act', and is mainly directed at Goldsmiths' LLB Law students.
