Event overview
'Britain in Europe' (BiE) working meeting, to adjust the thinktank's mission to the post-Brexit era. Keynote talks by Conor Geary (LSE) and former MEP Julie Ward (Labour).
Following the UK's withdrawal from the EU and in the light of UK politics rapidly taking a dangerous populist path, Goldsmiths' Britain in Europe thinktank will be renewing its mission and making the adjustments required to influence debates about - and take action on - the future relationship with the EU. This working meeting will serve as a platform to share ideas about the areas the thinktank should be focussing, and contributions it should be aiming to make, during the transition period and beyond, with a view to ensuring as close a connection with the EU as possible.
A keynote presentation will be delivered by renowned international human rights scholar and academic lawyer, Conor Gearty (LSE), who will be reflecting on the Conservatives' threats to take powers away from the Supreme Court and "update" the HRA.
Julie Ward, former MEP (Labour), will offer thoughts on her work at the European Parliament, the loss of UK influence there and the road ahead, particularly in relation to the EU's approach in the forthcoming negotiations.
Michaela Benson will discuss the impact that Brexit has already had on British citizens in the EU, and the challenges they're expected to face after the UK's withdrawal from the EU.
Julian Petley (Brunel) will be examining threats to the BBC and the wider role of the media in post-Brexit Britain.
Simon Griffiths and Carl Levy from Goldsmiths' Politics department, will contribute opinion on the politics of the Conservative government on Europe, in the implementation period and beyond.
The meeting is coordinated by the Head of the Department of Law, and BiE director, Dimitrios Giannoulopoulos.
