“But now they will treat us better”: Whiteness, passing, and racialisation among young post-Soviet migrants in Helsinki, Finland

“But now they will treat us better”: Whiteness, passing, and racialisation among young post-Soviet migrants in Helsinki, Finland

Guest speaker Daria Krivinos (University of Helsinki)

Drawing on fieldwork among young post-Soviet migrants in Helsinki, Finland between 2014 and 2016, I analyse the position of ostensibly white subjects who disrupt the norm of whiteness to such a degree that they are expelled from whiteness as a structural position of social and economic privilege. I locate these processes of racialisation within structures of racial capitalism that produce and manage racial difference within whiteness and Europe itself for the purposes of economic exploitation.

Part of the Anthropology, Goldsmiths Spring Seminar Series.

This event will take place on Zoom at 4.30pm GMT. Sign up via Eventbrite and a link will be sent 15 minutes before the event.
