Subject in the Mirror: Reflections on Positionality - Centre for Research Architecture - Forensic Architecture Public Platform Program.

How do we protect ourselves and our sources when speaking truth to power? What kind of tools do we need to navigate digital spaces safely? How do we create distance when our work is close to home? In an age of surveillance and data collection, where every contact leaves a trace, how can we render ourselves illegible to state and corporate actors? How can we exploit the blindspot?

This two-hour workshop is aimed at researchers, activists and anyone interested in prioritising anonymity and resisting contemporary data-mining and surveillance. We will discuss cyber security, legal loopholes, the ethics of working under a pseudonym and minimising your digital footprint.

Workshop facilitators will use their personal research as examples of different types of concerns around anonymity and invisibility as a researcher, as well as how these approaches shaped their research process. We will do a few short exercises in groups to encourage participants to think about the particularities of their position in the context of their work. We will collectively produce a document with guiding questions and resources for participants to take home.

Facilitators: Adeeba Husain and Siufan Adey
