Young soul DJ Chris becomes implicated in a murder. The year is 1977 and it’s the week of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Chris, a young black London DJ, runs pirate radio station Soul Patrol from an East End garage with his friend Caz. When a mutual friend is murdered whilst cruising in a London park, Chris is arrested for the murder. The debut feature film from Isaac Julien, Young Soul Rebels is a fascinating look at British culture in the late 1970s. Recalling the queer history of anti-fascist activism like Rock Against Racism, and featuring familiar faces such as Frances Barber, and Sophie Okenedo (in her film debut), while paying homage to early ‘race’ film Sapphire, Young Soul Rebels offers a vision of 1970s London as you’ve probably never seen it.
