Event overview
The AuralPluralities Network and the Music Research Series present "Listening, Research, and the PhD Journey"
In this session, we invite you to engage with the work of recently completed PhD researchers and those approaching submission, as they present a diverse range of sound-focused research. This is envisaged as an open conversation about the creative, critical, and personal pathways that shape intensive doctoral inquiry into sound and listening. Together, we’ll explore emerging questions and practices within the field, reflecting on what it means to listen through research, and how listening itself can become both method and subject. The session also opens space for discussion on the transitions, challenges, and insights that arise at the threshold of completion. Whether you're a fellow researcher, practitioner, or curious listener, this is an opportunity to discover new perspectives, exchange ideas, and consider the reverberations of sound-based inquiry as it moves from process to completion.
On the panel will be Dr Hardi Kurda who completed his PhD in 2025, discussing "Urgent Listening: Multisensory Engagements in a Time of Crisis" and Dr Chris Cook, who completed in 2024, reflecting on "Hearing and listening with dementia: Auraldiversity, sonic ethnography, and personhood".
