Days out in London this April

With the arrival of the end of term and the start of spring, why not take a break from studying and explore the city?

Daniel, our Student Community Leader for History, gives his recommendations for days our in London this month.

Nature day out

Start the day at the iconic Portobello Road Market and explore the various stalls and shops selling antiques, vintage fashion, well-known brands, handmade crafts and delicious foods from around the world. Portobello Road Market is in Notting Hill and provides multiple photo opportunities, as well as the obligatory Notting Hill film reference.

Holland Park is a 9-minute bus ride away and is well worth the journey! The park is home to a Japanese garden, which not only offers a calm and reflective place to think, but also a little slice of Japan that will look great on your Insta story.

The Dutch Garden is a couple of minutes away and is a great place to rest your feet and enjoy the rainbow of tulips which lend the garden its name.

The Design Museum is only a few minutes away from the park and is another great stop for anyone interested.

Culture day out

For the intellectual, London is full of museums that cover a range of subjects. The British Museum is free and offers an impressive collection of art and artefacts from all around the globe, allowing you to travel the world and lay your eyes on some of history’s most iconic artefacts. Standout pieces include the Rosetta Stone, Elgin Marbles, Bust of Ramesses the Great, and Hoa Hakananai’a.

The V&A is also free but offers amazing paid exhibitions too. Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear is probably the hottest one right now and offers visitors a celebration of some of the most innovative and iconic outfits in men’s fashion (the dress Harry Styles wore on the cover of Vogue is currently on display!).

A trip to a theatre in London’s West End is always recommended and there are countless shows to choose from, with tickets easy to purchase online. Wicked is one of the most popular and affordable, Hamilton and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ensure bragging rights, while The Woman in Black offers atmosphere and scares for the braver theatre-goer.
